Polythene drum pump features and maintenance

Polythene (polyethylene) drum pumps are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective solutions for transferring mild chemicals, water-based solutions, and non-aggressive liquids from drums or IBCs. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Key Features of Polythene Drum Pumps

✔ Material:

  • Polyethylene (HDPE/LDPE) – Resistant to acids, alkalis, and water-based solutions.

  • NOT suitable for strong solvents (e.g., acetone, toluene), oils, or high-temperature liquids.

✔ Chemical Resistance:

  • Good for: Dilute acids (e.g., 10% sulfuric), bleach, detergents, water.

  • Avoid: Hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, concentrated acids.

✔ Design:

  • Lightweight (~2-3 kg)

  • Manual or electric options

  • Typically 1" or 2" bung fitting for standard drums

✔ Max Viscosity: Up to 1,000 cP (for thin to medium fluids).

2. Types of Polythene Drum Pumps

TypeBest ForFlow RatePower SourcePrice Range
ManualSmall-scale, occasional use5-10 LPMHand-operated$50–$150
ElectricFaster, frequent transfers10-30 LPM12V/24V DC or 230V AC$200–$500
PneumaticHazardous areas (no sparks)15-25 LPMCompressed air$300–$700

3. Top Applications

  • Water treatment chemicals (bleach, alum solutions)

  • Cleaning agents (detergents, sanitizers)

  • Agricultural chemicals (fertilizers, mild pesticides)

  • Food-grade liquids (if FDA-approved PE)

4. Limitations of PE Pumps

❌ Not for organic solvents (will swell/crack)
❌ Low temperature resistance (max ~60°C / 140°F)
❌ Not for high-pressure pumping

6. Maintenance & Care

  1. Rinse after use – Prevents chemical residue buildup.

  2. Avoid UV exposure – Polythene degrades in sunlight.

  3. Check for cracks – Replace if brittle or damaged.

  4. Store indoors – Prolongs lifespan.

7. Alternatives to PE Pumps

If your liquid is too aggressive for polythene, consider:

  • Polypropylene (PP) pumps – Better for some acids/solvents.

  • Stainless steel (SS316) – For corrosive or high-purity liquids.

  • PTFE-lined pumps – For harsh solvents.
