How Roller Pumps Work

Roller pumps (also called peristaltic pumps) are a type of positive displacement pump that moves fluids by compressing and releasing a flexible tube with rotating rollers. They are widely used in medical, industrial, and laboratory applications due to their gentle, contamination-free pumping action.


Working Principle of a Roller Pump

  1. Flexible Tube/Hose – The pump uses a silicone, rubber, or thermoplastic tube that sits inside a circular pump housing.

  2. Rotating Rollers/Shoes – A rotor with 2 or more rollers compresses the tube against the pump casing as it turns.

  3. Peristaltic Action –

    • Compression Phase: As a roller presses the tube, it seals off a section of fluid and pushes it forward.

    • Recovery Phase: The tube rebounds behind the roller, creating suction to draw more fluid in.

  4. Continuous Flow – The process repeats with each roller, ensuring pulsation-free, steady flow.
