I. Grease: Definition and Essence:
1. Standard Definition
Grease is a semi-solid lubricating medium composed of base oil, thickener, and functional additives. At ambient temperatures, it exists as a paste that adheres to friction surfaces, serving to reduce friction, resist wear, seal, prevent rust, and dampen vibrations.
2. Essence (Core Principle)
The essence of grease: a semi-solid colloidal dispersion system where the thickener acts as a framework to adsorb and retain the base oil.
Simply put:
Thickener = Sponge framework
Base oil = Oil within the sponge
Under stress/heat, it releases an oil film for lubrication; at rest, it maintains its semi-solid form without loss.
3. Summary of Medium Properties
State: Semi-solid colloidal medium
Category: Lubricating medium / Tribological medium
Operating principle: Thixotropy (thins under shear, regains paste-like consistency upon cessation)
II. Classification of Greases:
1. Classification by thickener (most mainstream and commonly used)
(1) Calcium-based grease
Good water resistance, inexpensive, not heat-resistant
Primarily used in low-speed, general machinery, and water pumps
(2) Sodium-based grease
Heat-resistant, not water-resistant
Used in motors and high-temperature bearing areas
(3) Lithium-based grease
General-purpose, water-resistant, high-temperature resistant, excellent overall performance
Currently the most widely used general-purpose grease
(4) Complex lithium-based grease
High-temperature, long-life, multi-purpose
Mainstream for automotive, motors, bearings, construction machinery
(5) Aluminum-based / Complex aluminum-based grease
Water-resistant, anti-drip, excellent stringing properties
Open gears, chains
(6) Bentonite Grease (Inorganic Thickener)
No drop point, exceptional high-temperature resistance
(7) Polyurea Grease
High-temperature, long-life, metal soap-free
Specialized for motors and high-temperature bearings
(8) Fluorinated Grease (Perfluorinated Polyether)
Chemical/solvent resistance, high-temperature stability, exceptional durability
Precision instruments, vacuum systems, chemical corrosion protection
2. Classification by Application
(1) General-purpose Greases
Lithium-based, lithium complex—universal equipment use
(2) High-Temperature Greases
Lithium complex, polyurea, bentonite
(3) Extreme Pressure Anti-Wear Greases
Gears, bearings, heavy-duty equipment
(4) Waterproof Grease
Calcium-based, Aluminum-based, Compound Lithium
(5) Low-Temperature Grease
Sub-zero environments, precision machinery
(6) Food-Grade Grease
Food/medical equipment, safe and non-toxic
Sealing Grease
Valves, plugs, anti-seize/anti-stick
3. Most Common Industrial Greases (Simplified Version)
General-purpose lithium-based grease
Composite lithium-based grease

III. Only these types of barrel pumps can draw grease:
(1) Screw Pump (High-Viscosity Specific)
Suitable for: Conveying extremely soft, high-viscosity grease
Commonly used in automated, continuous conveying systems
(2) Pneumatic Plunger Grease Pumps (Most Common)
Suitable for: 18L, 20L, 50L, 200L grease drums
Principle: Compressed air drives a piston to force out paste-like grease
Advantages: High pressure, stable flow, explosion-proof, dirt-resistant
Applications: Industrial lubrication, filling, centralized oil supply systems
(3) Electric Plunger-Type Grease Pump
Suitable for: Fixed workshop stations, locations without compressed air
Note: Must be plunger-type construction, not standard impeller pumps
(4) Manual Grease Pump / Hand-Operated Rod Pump
For small containers and minimal usage
Low efficiency, only suitable for small-volume filling
IV. Pumps Absolutely Not Suitable for Grease Transfer:
Standard electric liquid transfer pumps (drum pumps / solvent pumps)
Centrifugal pumps, gear pumps (cannot draw high-viscosity grease)
Plastic hose pumps, diaphragm pumps (generally ineffective for grease)
